【山鹿市】令和6年度企画展Ⅲ「鏡のかがやき」

装飾古墳に見られる代表的な文様「円文」は、円形の青銅鏡を模していると考えられています。古代中国を起源とする鏡は、弥生時代に日本に伝わり、古墳時代には大量の鏡が副葬品として古墳に納められるようになりました。熊本県内でも、三角縁神獣鏡など、さまざまな鏡が古墳から出土しています。

本展では、県内で発掘された弥生・古墳時代の鏡30点をはじめ、神祭りに使用された石や土で作られた鏡の模造品、さらには近年嘉島町の古墳で発見された、鏡を吊るす様子が描かれた家形の埴輪（はにわ）を展示します。この家形埴輪は、塀で囲まれた非常に珍しいものとして、今回の企画展が初めて公開となります。

展示を通じて、古墳時代の人々にとって鏡がどのような意味を持っていたのか、また熊本の地で発展した装飾古墳に円文が描かれるようになった背景を考える機会としたいと思います。

さらに、「企画展特別講座」やギャラリートークのほか、円文をテーマにした「クイズ探検 円文を探せ！」、金属を使った鏡作り体験、缶バッジやキーホルダー作りなど、子どもから大人まで楽しめる関連イベントも充実しています。鏡の輝きを感じながら、ぜひ様々な体験にご参加ください。

【Yamaga City】2024 Special Exhibition III: “The Radiance of Mirrors”

The representative pattern of decorated tombs, the “enmon” (circular design), is thought to represent a circular bronze mirror. Mirrors, originating from ancient China, were introduced to Japan during the Yayoi period, and by the Kofun period, large quantities of mirrors were placed as grave goods in tombs. In Kumamoto Prefecture, a variety of mirrors, including the “Sankaku-enjin-shinju-kyo” (triangular-patterned beast-motif mirrors), have been discovered in ancient tombs.

This exhibition features 30 mirrors from the Yayoi and Kofun periods, excavated in the prefecture, as well as replicas of mirrors made from stone and clay used in religious ceremonies. In addition, we will display a house-shaped haniwa (clay figure) recently found in a Kofun-era tomb in Kashima Town, which depicts mirrors being hung. This rare haniwa, surrounded by a fence, will be exhibited for the first time in this special exhibition.

Through the exhibits, we invite visitors to reflect on the role and significance of mirrors in the Kofun period and explore why “enmon” was featured on the decorated tombs of Kumamoto.

The exhibition also offers related events such as special lectures, gallery talks, a “Quiz Expedition: Find the Enmon!” tour, and hands-on activities like making mirrors using metal, as well as creating badges and keychains. These events are designed for both adults and children, so everyone can enjoy the fascinating world of mirrors.

装饰古墓的代表性图案——“圆文”（圆形图案）被认为是圆形青铜镜的象征。起源于古代中国的镜子，在弥生时代传入日本，到古坟时代，大量的镜子作为陪葬品被放入古墓中。在熊本县内，也发现了多种镜子，包括**“三角缘神兽镜”**等。

本次展览将展示30件从县内出土的弥生和古坟时代的镜子，以及用于神祭的石镜和土制镜的仿制品。此外，我们还将展出近年在嘉岛町古墓中发现的描绘镜子被悬挂的家形埴轮（陶制人物像）。这件罕见的家形埴轮被围墙包围，是首次公开展示。

通过展品，我们邀请观众思考古坟时代人们对镜子的理解，并探讨为何熊本地区的装饰古墓上会出现“圆文”图案。

展览期间还将举行相关活动，如“企划展特别讲座”和画廊讲解，以及“寻找圆文的探险问答”游览等互动活动。此外，还有使用金属制作镜子的体验活动，以及制作徽章和钥匙链等手工活动，适合成人和儿童参加。请大家踊跃参与，一同体验镜子的辉煌世界！
