【熊本市中央区】熊本洋学校教師ジェーンズ邸

この建物は、明治4年（1871）に熊本洋学校の外国人教師ジェーンズを迎えるために建てられ、現存する熊本県内最古の洋館として、現在は熊本県の重要文化財に指定されています。

ジェーンズは明治4年から明治9年（1876）までの5年間、この地で暮らし、熊本の若者たちを教育し、熊本の近代化の礎を築きました。

さらに、この建物は明治10年（1877）に西南戦争の際、佐野常民が征討大総督有栖川宮から博愛社（後の日本赤十字社）の設立許可を受けた歴史的な場所でもあります。

当初、この建物は旧城址（現在の第一高校）に建てられましたが、時折役割を変えながら移転を繰り返し、最終的には水前寺成趣園の東側に隣接する地へ移設されました。

しかし、熊本地震で倒壊し、令和5年（2023）に水前寺江津湖公園内の新しい場所に移設・復元されました。

館内では、ジェーンズの愛用品や博愛社に関連する品々を展示しており、当時の歴史を感じることができます。

【Kumamoto City Chūō Ward】Kumamoto Foreign School Teacher Janes’ Residence

This building was constructed in 1871 (Meiji 4) to accommodate the foreign teacher, Mr. Janes, at Kumamoto Foreign School.

It is the oldest existing Western-style building in Kumamoto Prefecture and has been designated as an important cultural asset by the prefecture.

Mr. Janes lived here from 1871 to 1876 (Meiji 9) for five years, where he educated young people in Kumamoto, laying the foundation for the modernization of the region.

Additionally, in 1877 (Meiji 10), during the Seinan War, the building became the site where Tsunetami Sano received permission from General Arisugawa to establish the Hakuaisha (the predecessor to the Japanese Red Cross).

Originally, the building was located at the old castle site (now Kumamoto First High School), but it was relocated several times as its role evolved.

Eventually, it was moved to the eastern side of Suizenji Seicjunkuen Garden.

However, it collapsed during the Kumamoto Earthquake and, in 2023 (Reiwa 5), was relocated and restored to its current position in Suizenji Gotsuko Park.

Inside the building, you can find exhibits featuring Janes’ personal belongings and items related to the Hakuaisha, offering a glimpse into the history of this important place.
