【宇城市】蒙古襲来絵詞のリアル－海底に残された元寇－

令和6（2024）年は、鎌倉時代に元（モンゴル帝国）が日本に攻めてきた元寇（げんこう）の初戦、文永の役（1274年）から750年となる節目の年です。

本市は、元寇の戦いで先陣を切って活躍し、その後、当時の様子を唯一伝える現存する国宝「蒙古襲来絵詞（もうこしゅうらいえことば）」を残した竹崎季長（たけざき すえなが）ゆかりの地です。

竹崎季長は、元寇後、その功績により肥後国海東郷（現在の宇城市小川町海東地区）で地頭に任命され、所領の統治や地域の発展にも大きく貢献しました。

本市では、季長が残した「蒙古襲来絵詞」などの貴重な史料を基に、元寇や竹崎季長の歴史を広く知ってもらうため、元寇750年を記念した特別企画展『蒙古襲来絵詞のリアル－海底に残された元寇－』を開催します。

【Uki City】The Reality of the Mongol Invasion Picture Scrolls – The Mongol Invasion Preserved Under the Sea

The year 2024 (Reiwa 6) marks the 750th anniversary of the first Mongol invasion of Japan, known as the Battle of Bun’ei (1274), during the Kamakura period.

Our city is closely linked to Takezaki Suenaga, who played a key role in leading the charge during the Mongol invasions.

He is the one who left behind the “Mongol Invasion Picture Scrolls” (Kōkōshūrai Ekotoba), a national treasure, which is the only existing record of the events of that time.

After the Mongol invasions, Takezaki was appointed as the Jitō (steward) of the Kaito District in Higo Province (present-day Kaito, Ogawa Town, in Uki City).

He contributed significantly to the governance and development of the area.

To commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Mongol invasions, our city will host a special exhibition based on historical materials such as the “Mongol Invasion Picture Scrolls”.

The exhibition, titled “The Reality of the Mongol Invasion Picture Scrolls: The Mongol Invasion Preserved Under the Sea”, aims to raise awareness about Takezaki Suenaga and the Mongol invasions.

季长在元寇中担任先锋，立下赫赫战功，并留下了唯一传世的国宝《蒙古襲来絵詞》，现存唯一能传达当时战况的历史文献。

元寇之后，竹崎季长因其战功被任命为肥后国海东郷（现在的宇城市小川町海东地区）的地头，致力于当地的治理和发展。

为了纪念元寇750周年，我们将在本市举办特别展览，展示竹崎季长留下的《蒙古襲来絵詞》等史料。

本次展览名为《蒙古襲来絵詞的真实——海底遗存的元寇》，旨在向公众普及元寇历史及竹崎季长的贡献。
